Tour Guides Tourist Traps

Tour guides in Tangier are very tricky.  Most of them are a big scam.  Put it this way if a tour guide takes one to a rug making factory they are taking you on  a  big scam trip to something that really isn't even a big part of Tangier's culture.  They typically all line up in the port in white robes waiting for the day trip tourists to come off the boat feeling scared and willing to throw money at anything to ensure their safety.  This will result in the rug tour and being pressured to buy one for 4 times the price a normal Moroccan would pay.  Keep in mind the standard rug should only cost about 50euros max.   After the "rug adventure"  the guide will usually take them to a tourist restaurant that is priced 3 times the price of a normal Moroccan spot.  These places are usually about 12-15 euro each which isn't too much by most people's standards.  Keep in mind the tourist restaurants on the beach almost everyone speaks a little bit of English. One can walk into one on their own an it is usually no more than 5 euro each to eat, and it's AMAZING!  The truth about it is one does not need a guide.  All one needs is a map.  The shopkeepers do speak English and same with the majority of the restaurants along the beach.  Give any waiter or shopkeeper a tip and they will gladly help you with any information.  Tangier during the day is safer than almost any European city.  Keep in mind petty theft and begging is the only real problem.  Just keep an eye your belongings the same way one would when they around spots in Europe with a lot of Roma kids.  The best way to experience the real Tangier is explore on your own.  You can even meet English speaking locals and if you take care of them (buy them dinner tea etc) they will show you a Tangier better than ANY tour guide would show.
