Fake Hippies
Hippies in Morocco are relatively the same as in the US. DO NOT TRUST THEM. In America most of the new hippies claim they are a hippy are usually just as an excuse to be a junkie or use people. Real hippies don't live in cities and ask for money. They live in communities and share with everyone. If a Moroccan is dressed like a western hippie from the US or Europe stay very far away from them. This is a hustler or junkie. They do this because it lets tourists guard down seeing someone who looks like a "peaceful westernized Moroccan hippie". Keep in mind a real Moroccan hippie usually wears traditional Moroccan dress and does not dress like someone who works in a smoke shop. These are real Moroccan hippies. The ones who dress like westernized hippies are the most professional hustlers of them all. A lot will meet tourists in Tangier and act as if they will guide them down to Marrakesh for a large sum of money. You do not need this. We even spotted one on the train in the first class sleeper cars down to Marrakech. My Moroccan friend was so scared he wanted to be in a cabin car further away from him. This guy even had dreadlocks. Keep in mind as a rule of thumb. ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD DO NOT TRUST ANYBODY WITH DREADLOCKS. A lot of the time they are one of two things. 1. Undercover cops or 2. Fake Hippies. Both are trouble. Also keep in mind the most recent bombing in Marrakech the guy dressed as a Hippie to enter a western tourist cafe to plant the bomb. Do not trust hippies.
